Jody McClintock Rocks Mellott’s HR Department

Mellott takes great pride in our employees and every accomplishment they make. Jody McClintock, Mellott’s Human Resources Assistant Manager, has been with the company since 2017, and has always done a fantastic job in her position, along with making it a priority to always improve. Her hard work and dedication to Mellott are honorable and have not gone unnoticed.

Jody obtained two certifications. The first one was through the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). She chose to take the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) exam, and to qualify for the exam Jody needed to have a basic working knowledge of human resources or a bachelor’s degree in HR, and she had both. Once her application to sit for the exam was accepted, she was able to select a date six weeks ahead so she would have plenty of time to begin studying.

Jody purchased three separate learning systems in audio, video, and book formats, and chose a self-paced format as opposed to formalized classes. She studied several hours each evening along with six to eight hours on Saturday and Sunday. Jody had to go to a testing site in Northern Virginia to take the four-hour computer test. The SHRM-CP test had about 150 questions made up of knowledge and situational-judgement items based on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge.

Once Jody passed the SHRM-CP, she decided to pursue a senior level certification through the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI). To be eligible for the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification exam, you must have at least five years of experience in a professional level HR position and a bachelor’s degree. Jody met all the criteria to take the exam, and after she received her acceptance to sit for this exam, Jody once again prepared for intense studying using the same materials as before, but this time she focused more on the senior level subjects. She had to go to a testing site in Morgantown to take the three-hour computer exam. The breakdown of the exam was Leadership & Strategy, Employee Relations and Engagement, Talent Planning and Acquisition, Learning and Development, and Total Rewards.

When asked to reflect on her journey, Jody had this to say, “Obtaining the certifications has been something I’ve wanted to do for over ten years. While the certifications were not required for my position with Mellott, I really wanted the knowledge more so than the certifications. Even with 20+ years of HR experience, I knew there was a lot that I didn’t know. I know it sounds odd, but in a way, I enjoyed studying for the certifications. It was interesting to gain a deeper understanding of Human Resources and become more informed about topics that I already handle in my day-to-day position. In my prior HR positions at large corporations, I would not have had the opportunity to utilize a lot of the knowledge I acquired. But at Mellott, I can take that information and apply it directly to situations I frequently encounter.”

Jody proves that when you set goals and work hard to obtain them, success is imminent. Jody Rocks!
